Enjoy Live Performances in November

As the days get shorter and the weather cooler, enjoy some live music and performances at Glendale Public Library!

Patti Graetz brings her ladies' vocal ensemble, Women in Song, to the Main Library on Thursday, November 2 at 6:30 PM. This talented female troupe will perform Broadway favorites, popular songs from the 1930s to the present, and other musical delights.

Spotlight Youth Theatre’s performing arts troupe, Confetti, will perform at the Foothills Branch on Saturday, November 4 at 2 PM. This group, featuring performers ages 8-14, will perform a captivating holiday show that is fun for the whole family!

You can enjoy live acoustic music every month with our Coffeehouse series. On Wednesday, November 1 at 6:30 PM, Foothills Coffeehouse brings you "Bluegrass with a twist" from local band Red Rock Crossing. The following week, local performers Patrick Martin and Eric Ramsey will be featured at the Glendale Coffeehouse at Main Library on Thursday, November 9 at 6:30 PM. Patrick will perform original humor and love songs, while Eric gives a bluesy edge to his original compositions.

The ancient art of storytelling is celebrated on Thursday, November 16 during Tellabration! Members of the West Side Story Tellers will delight, captivate, and mesmerize audiences with their tales. The performance begins at 6:30 PM at the Main Library.

If you enjoy making music as well as playing it, be sure to join others at Glendale Public Library's Acoustic Jam programs.

On the first and third Friday of every month, bring your acoustic instrument and play bluegrass, country, folk, gospel, and more round-robin style at the Bluegrass Jam at the Foothills Branch! Audience members, singers and all levels of players are welcome on November 3 and 17 from 1-3 PM.

Looking for more places to play with others? Try the Acoustic Jam sessions at Foothills and Main Library. Foothills hosts acoustic players and their fans on Tuesday, November 14 at 6 PM, and Main Library follows up on Wednesday, November 29, also at 6 PM.

LIBCON West Is Coming in December!

Get ready to let loose, drop in, and geek out! Glendale Public Library is proud to present our second annual library comic convention on Saturday, December 9 from 11 AM-5 PM at the Main Library. Celebrate all things pop culture, with panels, gaming, crafts, cosplay, photo ops, vendors, food, and prizes at this free event! Hear from local authors, get your picture taken with a superhero, and more! In 2017, LIBCON West is expanding its programming to offer crafts, storytimes, trivia and more for kids and families. November Is Picture Book Month

Celebrate National Picture Book Month by reading and sharing your favorite picture book. As the first books read to a child, picture books are treasured by parents and children alike. Do you remember one fondly from your childhood? Ask the Youth Department staff and we might have it (or we can get it for you through interlibrary loan)! Holiday Closures

All Glendale Public Libraries will be closed on Friday, November 10 and Saturday, November 11 in observance of Veterans Day.

All branches will also close at 6 PM on Wednesday, November 22 and will remain closed

on Thursday, November 23 and Friday, November 24 in observance of Thanksgiving.

Please note that the library book drops will not be available on these days.

15th Annual Veteran's Day Ceremony

The city of Glendale and the Glendale Chamber of Commerce Military & Veterans Affairs Committee invite the public to attend the 15th annual Veterans Day Ceremony on Sat., Nov. 11, at 9 a.m. at the Glendale Main Library Auditorium, 5959 W. Brown St.

The ceremony will begin inside the library auditorium and feature special keynote speaker, Chief Master Sergeant Randy Kwiatkowski, Command Chief of the 56th Fighter Wing, Luke Air Force Base.

Glendale dignitaries including Glendale Mayor Jerry P. Weiers, active military members and local veteran organizations are invited to attend. The Presentation of Colors will be provided by The Marine Corps League’s Old Breed Detachment No. 767 Color Guard.

Following the keynote speaker, the ceremony will continue outside on the lawn of the library, adjacent to the Glendale Veterans Memorial, and include a flag raising, with an American flag, an Arizona State flag and a POW/MIA flag. Military vehicles provided by the U.S. Army will be on display near the monument for public viewing. The Veterans Day Ceremony will be highlighted with a flyover of jets from Luke Air Force Base at 10:30 a.m.

Members of the Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary will offer balloons for attendees to release at the conclusion of the event following the flyover, with a special note attached in honor of Arizona’s service men and women.

Commissioned by the Glendale Public Art Program with major funding through the city's 1 percent for Art Fund, artist Joe Tyler’s memorial is officially titled “For Every Drop of Blood—For Every Life Devoted.” For details about the Veterans Memorial, click here.

This event is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be provided. Please note that the Glendale Main Library itself will be closed for the holiday, although the auditorium wing will be open for this event. For more information, call the Glendale Public Art Program at 623-930-3557.

Following the Veterans Day Ceremony, everyone is welcome to attend a Flag Retirement Ceremony hosted by the Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary from 11a.m. to 2 p.m. at the DAV, 8447 N. 61st Ave. That ceremony will be supported by The Civil Air Patrol 388th Composite Squadron, Arizona Wing. The public is invited to bring worn flags to the ceremony for this protocol retirement.
