April Newsletter

Welcome to April Folks, it is a beautiful time of year here in Iowa. The weather is beautiful, flora and fauna are back from their winter slumber, and folks are venturing out. After all of those spring cleaning chores, be sure to kick back and relax on an afternoon with the window open, reading a great book from the library.

If you are looking for something to do, the library has plenty of opportunities for you; from Storytime to Family Fun, Quilts to Coffee, there is something for everyone.

April is also has two special items, the week of April 13th is both National Library Week and Week of the Young Child. We will be having special activities for both (see below) so be sure to stop by!

TableTop Tuesday

April 7th, 4-7:45pm

Join us as we play new and classic board games. Not sure how to play, no problem, we have experienced gamers to help you get started. This is a great opportunity to get together with friends and meet new ones, so step away from the screen and take a seat at the table!

All are welcome to this program, but games will be geared toward Adults and Young Adults. Drop in any time, you do not have to be here at 4pm to participate, but give yourself at least an hour to ensure you have time to play.

Quilts and Crafts

April 4th, 9am-3pm

Join other Crafters on the first Saturday of the month to share ideas and have great conversations as you work on your project. All crafts welcome!

Coffee Talk

April 11th, 10am

Love Coffee? So do we! But how much do you really know about it? We continue our Coffee Series with Rich Osborne of Greene Bean Coffee in Jefferson. Stop in to learn and enjoy some great coffee.

Knit, Crochet, Quilt, Cross Stitch, Scrapbook... All Crafts and Experience Levels Welcome!

Bring your project or just drop in every Tuesday at 6:30pm in the Fireplace Room on First Floor.

Tablet Tutor

April 14th, 10am or April 17th, 2pm

Bring in your IPAD, Kindle, Android, or other E-Reader, and we will discuss how to use it as well as what resources you have available through the library.

National Library Week Special Craft - April 14th

In addition to all of the great things offered here at Ericson, we will be doing a special folded book art craft for you to take home. Stop in at 6:30pm on the 14th to learn how.

First sponsored in 1958, National Library Week is a national observance sponsored by the American Library Association (ALA) and libraries across the country each April. It is a time to celebrate the contributions of our nation's libraries and librarians and to promote library use and support. All types of libraries - school, public, academic and special - participate.

Let your voice be heard at this years first Legislative Forum. Come and meet with your local Iowa legislators. Coffee and rolls will be provided. Meets in 2nd Floor Meeting Room

Genealogy Workshop

April 20th, 6pm - 7:45pm

Join Pamela Schwartz, Boone County Historical Soc. Executive Director, as we discuss genealogical research and work through genealogical hurdles. Drop in any time, group meets in 2nd Floor Meeting Room.

Book Discussion

April 21st, 7pm

We discuss the 2012 best seller “Gone Girl”, by Gillian Flynn. It has appeared on a number of “Best of” lists and inspired the 2014 movie of the same name.

Magic Monday / PoKeMonDay

April 13th and 27th, after school to 5:30pm.

We explore the worlds of Trading Card Games as we set up a time for you to come in and play your favorites. All games and all players welcome, these are not tournaments, just a time for people to get together and have a great time.

April 13th: Music Monday - Enjoy music and dancing in the library!

April 14th: Taco Tuesday - Participate in a storytime about a Dragon and his tacos!

April 15th: Work Together Wednesday - Build LEGOs with your child. (After 10:30)

April 16th: Artsy Thursday - Create something special with your child. (After 10:30)

April 17th: Family Friday - Spend time reading with your child in the library.


Every Wednesday and Thursday at 10AM, stop in and enjoy a story in our Children's Department.

April 10th, we welcome special guest reader, Doug Stier.

April 15th and 16th we will have a special guest discussing insects immediately after Storytime.

Family Fun - 1st and 3rd Tuesday of the Month

April 7th, 6:30pm

Candy Land Alive! Enjoy a story and play life size Candy Land. Play the game and finish the evening with a candy-related craft.

April 21st, 6:30pm

Hungry Caterpillar Food Walk! Hear a story about our favorite caterpillar, then we go outside to search for all the food caterpillars eat; we close out the evening with a caterpillar craft.

Children's Fiction

LEGO Graphic Novel Lab

April 8th, 3pm

Would you like to create your own graphic novel? Do you love LEGOs? Create your own graphic novel using our LEGO Story Starter program.

Signup is required and each person will be allowed 20 minutes at a time to create, program is for elementary children.


April 15th, 3pm

Bring your device, or come without, and enjoy playing Minecraft with friends.

LEGO Robot Drop-In

Throughout the month of April stop in any time after school to help build our first LEGO Robot! We have all the supplies to build it, but need your mind to put it together. Earn a free one time Dairy Queen Cone certificate for your participation.
