Libraries are Alive!
by Branch Manager Mary Blosser
We librarians are often asked if we’re afraid we’ll be out of a job in a few years. Some people think libraries will become passé. It’s a valid curiosity, given the explosion of technology and accessibility of information in Information Age.
Reading is more important now than ever. Options range from print and e-books to audio and e-audio. A Spring 2016, PEW Research study found that 65% of Americans have read a print book in the past year, 28% have read an e-book, and 14% have listened to an audiobook. The same study revealed that e-book readership jumped by 11% from 2011. Libraries will continue to be meaningful both today and tomorrow.
With e-books, anyone can borrow, read, renew, or return materials at practically any time of day or night. All you need is a library card. It doesn’t stop there. Our libraries respond to your varied interests with a plethora of interesting, intriguing, instructive, innovative, and fun opportunities.
We serve you through outreach via programming and collaboration. We love to share information and entertainment of all kinds. It is gratifying to hear from so many patrons that their lives have been enhanced as a result of library programs and materials.
Here’s an example of how libraries can help you. With the upcoming election in mind, you might be interested in a biography of one of the candidates. We have candidate biographies and more available at the library in print or electronic formats. Make an informed vote, whether it’s local, state, or national.
P&PL has a lot of free educational and programing opportunities. We also provide Wi-Fi, GED counseling, book clubs, classes, contests, notary services, and engaging conversation! It’s all free. Libraries are invaluable. Come relax, rewind, and renew your mind and spirit when the day’s challenges exhaust you and fatigue manifests at the end of the day. We'll be around for a long time yet.
Learn how to help the P&PL Foundation in their mission to enhance the library district by raising, managing and allocating funds to expand and improve the facilities, programs and services of our libraries.
You still have plenty of time. Every book you read and register give you an additional chance to get a gift basket. We have four of them! Regular prize for reading just one book is a choice of insulated lunch bag or blender bottle.
